I make furniture, small structures and other things from wood and similar materials.
Most of what I make, I design myself. I also take on collaborative commissions, helping people develop and realise their own ideas for things made from wood.
I repair and renew objects and spaces too. Giving tired or treasured things another chance at life.
Some of my projects take months to complete. Other jobs are done in a single day.
Every project starts with a conversation. Sometimes there's a clear brief, sometimes barely more than the outline of an idea.
For all but the simplest jobs I'll normally come and visit, prepare drawings, and if needed material samples.
I'm always happy to talk it through, however early you are in your project.
I'm based just outside Castle Cary in Somerset.
I use a mix of modern machinery and traditional techniques, though I'm certainly not a slave to tradition. Repetitive parts are produced with computer controlled machines and I use power tools where needed.
I finish by hand, normally with brushed on paint and hand applied oils and waxes.
Most of my projects are assembled and finished in my workshop. That means less to sort out on site, less mess, and a consistently high quality result.
Whilst I work mainly by myself I have a small but trusted team of people I can call on to help with larger projects and specialist jobs.
Every project is different, but I tend to favour durable approaches, and materials that age well.
I work with solid timber and manufactured materials like plywood and MDF.
Historically I worked with veneers and laminates too, and I am experienced in incorporating custom metalwork into my designs.
I'm comfortable proposing a range of materials and working with you to decide which best fits intended outcome and budget.
In my experience the most successful work is usually less about attracting attention, and more about making a space function and feel better.
Well executed modest and perhaps even plain work is my preference.
